The HK Market Game: How It Works, And How To Play

The HK market game is a simulated trading competition we run every month on our Discord server. It’s free to join, and free to play. There are prizes and glory for the winners.

To get started, do /marketgame. This will call up the bot, and open the interface for you.

Next, click “Manage My Position” to make your allocation. Think of this as a simulated position in SPY. You can hold up to $100,000 - enter a positive number to go long, or a negative number to go short. You must have your position entered for the day prior to 9:25 AM, Eastern Standard Time. But if you get it in by midnight, you’ll be eligible for some bonus points.

You’ll earn (or lose!) simulated money, based on if you'd entered your position at market open, and exited at market close the next day. Note that this excludes premarket and after hours movements. Winners are awarded and scores are reset at the end of the month.

Your score is the total profit you’ve made, divided by the average amount you invest. We’ve run simulations, and determined that the optimal strategy is to scale your answer with how confident you are in the market that day. If you’re 100% sure SPY is going up tomorrow, that’s a good day to go long the full $100,000. If you’re only 60% sure, you’re gonna want to make a smaller move. In simulations, players with this strategy win fairly often.

You can use the “Check My Position” and “Announce My Positions” to privately check your allocation, or show everyone else your position. You can do similar things with “See My Score” and “Announce My Score”.

Lastly, you can check the current high scores. For privacy reasons, this will only show the top 5, but game moderators can show the whole list. Every so often, we’ll show how everyone is doing.

At the end of every month, we reset scores and award prizes. The top 3 all get prizes - usually including some HaiKhuu swag - and the winner gets a custom trophy.

That’s about it! If you have any further questions, just drop us a line. Good luck, and happy trading!
